Beatles’ US tour photos to be auctioned

A Christie’s employee hangs Mike Mitchell’s photograph of The Beatles where his collection is being exhibited at a hotel in London.

The previously unseen photographs by US photographer Mike Mitchell were taken during the 1964 visit to the US. The collection of 50 pictures entitled Beatles Illuminated is expected to fetch $100,000 – £61,500 – when they are auctioned in New York on July 20. More than 8,000 fans packed into the Washington Coliseum on February 11, 1964 and they were treated to the Beatles at their very best.

The Washington Coliseum was not only their first US concert but also by far the largest venue in which the Beatles had ever played. Its unique set-up – it was often used for boxing matches – meant that the Fab Four were surrounded by adoring, cheering fans
