Bid to restore meadows in Dales launched

A PROJECT has been launched to restore the internationally-renowned hay meadows in the Yorkshire Dales which have been undermined by intensive farming.

The Yorkshire Dales Millennium Trust (YDMT) is overseeing a programme to restore nearly 100 acres of meadows throughout the coming months and in the summer next year.

The Into the Meadows initiative is also aimed at educating residents and visitors about the natural, cultural and historical heritage of the habitats. A series of themed events and activities for schools and the public are being organised.

The YDMT’s project manager, Don Gamble, said: “We’re very pleased that we’ve been able to set up the new project, which builds on our experience of providing education and conservation work linked to the iconic flowery meadows of the Dales. We and our partners knew that there was strong demand for further work in the area, so we’re very grateful to our supporters and funders who have enabled the project to go ahead.”

The conservation work will see ripe meadow seed harvested and spread on meadows to re-introduce wildflowers in the habitats.
