Big police presence for crunch match

A LARGE police operation is set to be mounted this weekend as Sheffield Wednesday play their final match of the season against Crystal Palace at Hillsborough.

The fixture could see either team face relegation from the Championship. Chief Insp Simon Verrall, who will be overseeing policing arrangements for the match, said: "This is likely to be a capacity crowd and travel is difficult at the best of times.

"The kick-off is timed across all league games, so I would ask that all fans leave plenty of time for their journey to enjoy the game."

Police are advising fans who normally travel by tram to the match to arrive at Shalesmoor tram stop no later than 11.30am on Sunday to be at Hillsborough in time for the 1pm kick-off.

The Supertram service is almost certainly set to be suspended to allow for urgent works on the line.

Instead, trams will run as far as Shalesmoor, where a replacement bus service will run to the ground, escorted by police motorcyclists.
