Blaze damages food factory

More than 30 firefighters tackled a large blaze at Dearne Valley Foods in Thurnscoe early yesterday after a fire in a food fryer spread to the roof.

Crews from Dearne and Adwick fire stations were called to the premises on Albion Drive at around 12.15am and quickly drafted in support from other stations.

A spokesman for South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service said: "At the height of the fire, eight fire engines were at the scene along with an aerial ladder platform, and local residents were advised to keep doors and windows closed due to the amount of smoke in the area.

"Firefighters managed to create a fire break to stop the blaze spreading to the firm's offices, and also protected a number of oil tanks and several caravans nearby.

"Two fire engines remained at the scene on Tuesday morning, damping down."

Firefighters from the service will be hosting an open day in The Moor, Sheffield, on Sunday, July 18. Visitors will be able to see a fire engine, view a chip pan fire demonstration and receive advice on fire safety issues.

Manager of Central fire station, Diane Malpass said: "The event enables us to further engage with the communities we serve in a fun and informal environment."
