Blazing sun

IT’S not just some woolly animals that don’t like the heat – high temperatures can pose a threat to great swathes of the countryside if day-trippers are not careful.

There was renewed evidence for this over the weekend when some unseasonably warm weather brought Yorkshire folk out en masse. It is at times of heat, or after a few drinks, however, that people can become careless and sadly the combination of the Sahara-like sun and barbecues, Chinese lanterns or tossed-away cigarettes produced a series of blazes.

These can damage the natural landscape, kill birds nesting on the ground, pollute the air and pose a major threat to public safety.

The fire on Ilkley Moor five years ago, which raged for more than 24-hours, underlines the need for visitors to take special care whether they are relaxing in either of the region’s two national parks or any of the numerous council-run green spaces.

Yorkshire is lucky enough to have some spectacular natural scenery – everyone should do their bit to ensure it is preserved for future generations to enjoy.
