Blocks of student flats set to be built

MORE than 560 students will get the chance to live on campus when new halls of residence open in time for next September’s intake at the University of Hull.

The £30m development on Cottingham Road will provide 565 bedrooms, including standard, deluxe rooms and studio flats.

Arranged around two squares, the blocks of flats will go up on a grassed area in the north east corner of the campus, to the south of Inglemire Lane and to the west of Newlands Science Park.

Director of campus and accommodation services Trudi Vout said: “At the moment we only have 288 other rooms on campus.

“We know our first years very much prefer to be in hall and on campus.

“We are finding that as students pay more for fees and accomodation, they are slightly more choosy in what they are looking for and we have a small number of students who prefer something in the deluxe range.”

She said students could look forward to “good social spaces”, slightly bigger kitchens and communal studies.

Work is due to start on the flats in May. Partner-in-charge at GSSArchitecture Jonathan Hunter said: “GSS are delighted to have secured planning permission for the University of Hull, despite a challenging programme.”

In recent years plans by developers for large-scale student accomodation, including at Anderson Wharf on Wincolmlee and at St Andrew’s Dock, have failed to get off the drawing board.
