Blow for region as Green Bank bids rejected
YORKSHIRE MPs and business leaders have criticised the Government’s decision to base the headquarters of the UK’s first Green Investment Bank in Edinburgh despite the region’s strong green and financial credentials.
Yesterday’s announcement from Business Secretary Vince Cable – which meant Yorkshire’s three bidding cities of Leeds, Sheffield and Hull missed out – was also chided as a failed opportunity to rebalance the North/South economic divide in England.
The Institute of Directors in Yorkshire joined the criticism but Mr Cable said basing the headquarters in Edinburgh, with the main transaction team in London, would harness both city’s strengths and “support the Green Investment Bank’s ambition to become a world leader”.
