Blueprints unveiled for rehab centre

initial designs for a new controversial new rehabilitation unit at a hospital which currently provides emergency care have been unveiled by NHS managers.

At present, the Montagu Hospital in Mexborough, near Doncaster, accepts patients suffering from potentially life-threatening conditions in ambulances.

But under the new plans, those services would be moved to Doncaster, and the hospital would become a centre from people recovering from conditions like strokes and broken hips.

The proposed layout and design of the rehabilitation centre, which is due to open at Montagu Hospital in Mexborough early next summer, have been approved by medics.

Chris Ellingworth, Clinical Director at Doncaster and Bassetlaw Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Montagu Hospital, said: “The state-of-the-art centre will be designed to maximise rehabilitation for patients recovering from serious injuries or illness, stroke or other neurological disorders, amputations or complex orthopaedic problems.”

It is expected to open next year.
