Body of student, 18, who went missing after city night out pulled from river

THE body of a missing student who vanished after a night out in York was pulled from a river near the city centre by police divers yesterday.

Police had earlier received a call from an angler who had spotted the body at 11.30am in the River Foss close to St George's Fields.

An underwater search team from West Yorkshire Police was called in and the body of Jonathan Havron was removed from the water at about 1.40pm.

Distraught relatives of Jonathan formally identified the body of the 18-year-old, who went missing early on Saturday, February 27, after a night out in York city centre.

Inspector Mark Henderson, who is based in York, said: "Although there are no suspicious circumstances surrounding his disappearance, we are still trying to establish how Jonathan came to be in the river."

Jonathan , who lived in Huntington in York, was last seen at the riverside pub The Lowther, in Cumberland Street.

The discovery of his body came only a day after North Yorkshire Police announced that underwater searches had concluded and were unlikely to resume unless officers received new information.

Jonathan's family had staged an "awareness campaign" after his disappearance in the hope of finding new information about the whereabouts of the Bishop Burton College student.

Friends and family joined police to highlight the case to drinkers outside The Lowther on Friday evening last week, and leaflets were also handed out at York City's football match against Salisbury City on Tuesday night.

An inquest will be held at a later date.
