Boost for town’s historic buildings

FUNDING for a restoration scheme to repair some of Selby’s historic buildings and bolster civic pride, has been agreed.

Around £300,000 has already been spent under the project between English Heritage and Selby District Council over the past two years, supporting the maintenance and upkeep of historic buildings ranging from pubs to monuments to a fish and chip shop.

Now a further £40,000 has been pledged towards the scheme over the next 12 months.

Coun Mark Crane, leader of the council, said: “This is a fantastic scheme which aims to engender a sense of civic pride and improve significantly the image of the town to the local community and to visitors and investors.

“Together the projects completed over the last two years add up to a significant improvement for this area.

“There is a real sense that the quality of Selby town centre is being raised to set the scene for the coming years.”

Businesses can apply to the council for grants for up to half the cost of the necessary work, with a limit of £10,000. The funding is available for any buildings in Selby town centre.
