Booze-free pub crawl to aid ‘Dry January’

A NATIONAL campaign to make January a month of sobriety will come to Hull on Friday when the city hosts an alcohol-free pub crawl.

Hull Council and NHS Hull are supporting the Dry January campaign by Alcohol Concern, and are inviting people to join them for a soft drink.

The event begins at Garbos Bar and Grill in Silver Street at 11.30am and free drinks will be served to the first to arrive.

Coun John Hewitt, city council portfolio holder for neighbourhoods and communities, said: “We want people to have fun when socialising but to know their limits and the impacts of alcohol.

People can have a great time without drinking and this mini-pub crawl will offer advice and tips to do this as well as advice on safer drinking and how to make changes in the way people drink alcohol to live a healthier lifestyle.”

Graeme Dixon, of NHS Hull partner agency Action For Change, added: “The Dry January campaign gave us an idea to work with the management team at Garbos to demonstrate how much fun it is possible to have without having an alcoholic drink.

“There will be advice available on safe and sensible drinking, general healthy lifestyle information and Humberside Police will be providing guidance on alcohol and the law.

“If you fancy a bit of help to reinforce those dreaded New Year resolutions and practical advice on how to achieve a healthy relationship with alcohol, then drop in for a drink and chat.”

The campaign urges people to give up alcohol between for the entire month. More than 10 million adults in England drink more than the recommended daily limit, and 2.6 million drink more than twice that. The alcohol-related output loss to the UK economy is estimated at £6.4bn.
