BPP candidate arrested over ‘election fraud’ in West Yorkshire

A FAR right candidate in next month’s Calderdale Council elections has been arrested on suspicion of electoral fraud.

David Jones, 26, was arrested by police on Friday in Todmorden.

He was questioned and released on bail until the end of July pending further inquiries.

Mr Jones is standing for the British People’s Party (Putting Britons First) in the Todmorden ward of the council elections.

A Calderdale Council spokesman said: “This is a police matter and has been referred to them for investigation.

“As such it would be inappropriate for Calderdale Council to comment at this time.”

He explained that despite the arrest did not affect Mr Jones’ eligibility to stand in the election.

Mr Jones also stood last year for the same party in Todmorden. He came last, with 203 votes. The seat was won by Labour candidate Jayne Booth.

He also stood in May 2010, polling 283 votes.

In his election manifesto, Mr Jones calls for no demolition of any more of Todmorden’s historic buildings and for the council to stop funding Incredible Edible Todmorden, (a successful, crusading environmental group), Gay Rights groups, Todmorden Pride and “other out-of-control groups”.

He also wants to see the abolition of Todmoden Town Council which he describes as “a massive waste of taxpayers’ money”, a crackdown on heroin dealing in the town as well as “proper punishment” for criminals.

His wish list extends to removing Todmorden from Calderdale Council following negotiations with the Boundary Commission and a call for an increased police presence in the town which would see “useless PCSOs (replaced) with real coppers”.

He also demands an “official war” against political correctness in schools as well as asking for all equality and diversity officers to be sacked.

Last year councillors were told more must be done to prevent violent extremism.
