Brando 'fell in love with corner of Kent'

The late Marlon Brando's former personal assistant has spoken of the actor's love for a corner of the English countryside which is threatened by development.

The Hollywood heavyweight spent nearly six months in the village of Selling, near Faversham, Kent, according to Caroline Barrett, who said it was one of his dying wishes to return.

Ms Barrett, who lives in Los Angeles, had now lodged an objection to plans to build an industrial storage and distribution centre off a lane in the village, which was a favourite haunt of his.

In the online objection Ms Barrett said: "I first came to Selling with the late Marlon Brando over 20 years ago.

"He had never been to Kent and he wanted to see the Garden of England. We came to Selling intending to stay for a weekend but Mr Brando loved it so much we he stayed for nearly six months.

"He fell in love with your beautiful countryside and in particular Owens Court and the little lane serving it. We walked regularly down this lane enjoying the landscapes and admiring your stunning beamed Tudor houses and farm buildings.

"I believe a few days before Mr Brando died he expressed a wish to see Kent once more. That's how much he fell in love with Selling and the little Owens Court Lane."

Ms Barrett, who still visits the area twice a year, said if Brando was still alive he would be objecting. Dozens of complaints have been made to Swale Borough Council against the plans, most from concerned local villagers.
