Bras help bridge funding gap for cancer charity by crossing the Humber

STAFF at Marks & Spencer stores across the region have pulled off an uplifting fund-raising attempt by collecting enough bras to span the entire length of the Humber Bridge.

Workers from stores in Hull, Beverley, Anlaby and Grimsby collected 3,500 old and unwanted bras as part of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

They spent three hours tying them together to form an unbroken chain across the 1,410-metre length of the bridge.

They raised more than 1,500 through donations, and all the bras will now be given to Oxfam's Wastesaver recycling plant, where they will either be recycled or sent to developing countries.

Sharon Blagdon, food section manager at M&S Hull, who organised the appeal, thanked women who had supported it and said the charity was carrying out important work.

She said: "We'd like to thank the local community for digging deep into their underwear drawers to help us reach our goal.

"Breakthrough Breast Cancer is the UK's largest and most influential breast cancer charity and, thanks to its scientific research, fewer women die of breast cancer today compared with 10 years ago.

"We'd like to thank all the customers who have helped us to collect so many bras and raise such a fantastic amount of money and we hope that our charity challenge helps to raise awareness and support for the organisation so it can continue with its invaluable work."

Many of the volunteers who laid the bras across the bridge wore pink to mark the start of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
