Pupils hit new high with GCSE grades

GCSE results as they come in

The future looked bleak for pupils at Campsmount Technology College in Norton, Doncaster, when a blaze destroyed most of the buildings last December.

But teenagers who sat their exams in the summer beat the odds by recording some of the school's best results.

Writing on the school's website, headteacher Andy Sprakes said: "Congratulations to our amazing students! Today's GCSE results are breathtaking considering our turbulent year.

"95% of Y11 students gained 5 A*-C GCSE grades - another record- breaking year! 41% of students achieved 5 A*-C grades including English and maths.

"Once again, this shows the tremendous spirit that exists at Campsmount. To gain so much success in a period of such adversity is an amazing achievement. My congratulations goes to all of our wonderful staff and students. Well done!!!"

More than 60 firefighters tackled the blaze at the school. The gymnasium, library and a number of classrooms were saved but the rest of the school was gutted. Mobile buildings were later erected on the site as a temporary school was built.

Last week the school achieved excellent A-level results, with the average points score for the pupils increasing by 8.7%, from 652 last year to 709 this year.
