Bride who lost brother in battle weds war hero soldier

Rosie-Ann Stone, 22, tied the knot with Private Liam Fisher, also 22, of 3rd Battalion, The Yorkshire Regiment.

In 2012, before the couple met, Liam tried to save the life of Rosie-Ann’s soldier brother Gregg by acting as a human shield as battle raged around them.

He cheated death when a bullet struck his helmet as he dragged Gregg, 20, of Atwick, near Hornsea, into a ditch and lay on top of him. But Gregg could not be saved, and the young soldier died of his wounds at the scene.

Rosie-Ann got engaged to Liam last November, months after she was acquitted of killing her elder and ‘best friend’ sister Jennie, 26, by careless driving while over taking a lorry.

Archbishop of York, Dr John Sentamu, was so moved by the story of the family who lost a son and daughter in eight months that he granted a licence for the couple to marry in the Minster.

Leading the service, the Rev Canon Michael Smith, Pastor of the Minster, told the 40 guests: “I know some of you have been to some really dark and painful places. Love is about being prepared to make sacrifices for the person or people we love.

“We remember those unable to come here today and are not here. We remember in God’s presence Gregg and Jennie. We remember those lines that ‘Love never dies’.”

Rosie-Ann said before the wedding: “We are so happy. Gregg would be giddy. He would be shocked, but he’d be so pleased.”
