Brides splash out on big day

The total which brides-to-be expect to spend on their wedding has shot up despite the economic downturn but prospective husbands are hoping for a 10 per cent cut in the budget for the big day, according to research.

Women now expect to spend about £8,380 on their wedding, up 48 per cent on the £5,661 recorded in pre-downturn 2007, according to the John Lewis Insurance Wedding Report 2012.

Men, said to be more frugal, expect to spend an average of £7,058, down £733 on 2007.

Brides-to-be also upgraded their expected spend on the honeymoon, from £1,594 to £2,034, while men lowered their planned spend from £1,922 to £1,742.
