A bridge too far as the Hull 10k falls short...

THE Hull 10k became the Hull 9k when a bridge become stuck, forcing organisers to arrange a last-minute diversion.

Organisers of the Jane Tomlinson Hull 10k were told just 30 minutes before yesterday’s race was due to start that a bridge near Hull Marina was stuck.

It meant the 3,500 runners missed 1km but most took the disappointment in their stride.

A race spokeswoman apologised and said the circumstances were beyond their control.

“A course diversion had to be put in place after a passenger bridge close to Hull Marina became stuck in the upright position.

“Despite organisers’ best efforts to resolve the problem, it was ultimately decided that the best course of action was to put a diversion in place to allow the event to continue.

“As a result, however, the course was reduced to approximately 9km. We know our runners will be extremely disappointed and we share that feeling greatly.

“While we offer our sincere apologies, we would also stress that today’s circumstances were entirely beyond their control and every possible course of action was taken before the decision was made to divert the course.”

Organisers said every runner would be able to enter next year’s event for just £10. A big discount on the usual fee of £28.
