Police say there are no suspicious circumstances behind the death of Corporal Adam Hosford, who is reported to have died suddenly on his 25th birthday.
The Royal Dragoon Guards announced the news on their Facebook page in a post which read: “It is with the utmost sadness that the Regiment must announce that Corporal Adam Hosford tragically died in Catterick Garrison over the Easter Weekend.”
“We have lost a brilliant soldier and a loyal friend. We will cherish his memory. Our thoughts are with his family, friends and loved ones.
“It is requested that they be given privacy during this difficult time. Quis Separabit.”
Police were called to Catterick Garrison on Monday evening to reports of a man’s “sudden death”.
Father Sebastian Hyatt, the chaplain of 2 Duke of Lancaster’s regiment, told how he baptised Cpl Hosford.
He posted a picture on Twitter with the message: “Please pray for Cpl Adam Hosford who died on his 25th birthday this weekend. I baptised him on H12.”
North Yorkshire Police said inquiries are ongoing but Cpl Hosford’s death is not being treated as suspicious.
The Royal Dragoon Guards, which mostly recruits soldier from the North Yorkshire area, is one of the most experienced cavalry units in the British Army.
More than 2,000 tributes and messages of condolence were left on the regiment’s Facebook page.
Russell Dudley wrote: “Broken is not the word. Mate I’m proud to have been part of your life and sad not to be able to speak to you now. Rest easy young brother I will miss you lots. “
Jack Taylor posted a message saying: “An amazing bloke, fantastic sense of humour, very intelligent, outstanding soldier, fiercely competitive (especially with me!) and such a shame, it’s been a right laugh growing up in the Army with Adam and travelling the world for the past 8 years, would never have seen this coming and a terrible shame, rest in peace mate X”
Ross Turner added: “Devastating news, it’s been an honour to serve with you. My thoughts are now with your mum,dad, close family and friends. Place want be the same with out ya.”
