Bringing the past to life
WRITER and broadcaster Michael Wood has called on the public to delve into archaeology on their doorstep amid a growing popularity for community digs.
Mr Wood will be the keynote speaker at a York University conference on Wednesday to examine the relationship between archaeology and the public. He will discuss his BBC television series, The Story of England, which used the community history of Kibworth in Leicestershire to provide an insight into Britain’s history. He said: “Engagement with the public is vital if we want to show people how compelling, and important, the past can be.”
The conference will showcase community archaeology projects in York including the Hungate dig in the city centre and excavations at Heslington East on the site of the university’s £750m campus expansion.
