British films get helping hand with £15m fund

The UK Film Council launched a £15m "film fund" yesterday to champion home-grown movies.

The annual fund is open for applications and a portion of the budget will be ring-fenced for film development.

The remaining budget will be safeguarded for the fund's own production investments, with further details to be announced.

A new national online "talent showcase" is also being proposed, which could unearth the stars of tomorrow.

The council is planning to launch this initiative in the autumn.

John Woodward, chief executive officer of the council, said: "The aim is for the film fund to attract the best talent, encourage creative risk taking, and deliver great films to audiences."

The UK has enjoyed big movie success in recent years, with Slumdog Millionaire sweeping the board at last year's Oscars and stars like Carey Mulligan and Colin Firth receiving Academy Award nominations this year.
