Brothers jailed over house weapons hoard

Two brothers have been jailed for a total of 18 years after police found a sub-machinegun, sawn-off shotgun and ammunition hidden at a house.

Judge Peter Benson yesterday described the weapons, which were hidden behind a bath panel at the house in Harrogate Avenue, Undercliffe, Bradford, as lethal and noted that some of the rounds recovered included expanding ammunition, which would cause maximum damage to anybody shot with it.

Waheed Rehman, 27, had bought the unfurnished property a few months before police raided the house in January 2008.

Rehman and his 25-year-old brother Faiz, of Rylstone Gardens, Undercliffe, were both found guilty last week after a trial of possessing the Mac 10 sub-machinegun, the sawn-off double-barrelled shotgun and ammunition.

During the raid officers also seized more than 4,500 worth of cocaine and cannabis and Waheed Rehman was also found guilty of possessing drugs with intent to supply.

Waheed Rehman was yesterday jailed for 10 years for the firearms and drugs offences. His brother was locked up for eight years.

Bradford Crown Court heard that the 9mm ammunition and the shotgun cartridges were capable of being fired from the two weapons seized.

"These are very serious matters," the judge told the two men. He said the sub-machine gun was a dangerous device in the hands of people associated with drugs.
