Brown joins row over legal aid for three MPs

GORDON Brown has entered the row over legal aid for the three Labour MPs accused of fiddling their Parliamentary expenses yesterday, saying they would have to refund it.

It was disclosed on Monday that David Chaytor, Elliot Morley and Jim Devine would receive legal aid.

The courts can now means-test white-collar defendants for legal aid but changes are not being implemented in time to cover the MPs' case.

When asked, whetherv he thought the money would have to be paid back, Mr Brown replied: "I think the evidence is that people in their position will have to pay back the money – or most of the money – they get in legal aid."
