Budding builders get to grips with construction industry

ALMOST 1,000 pupils from primary schools in Doncaster, Sheffield, Rotherham, Barnsley and North Derbyshire are taking part in events this week designed to give them a taste of the construction industry.

Youngsters involved in the Build It scheme at Sheffield’s Kelham Island Museum used a variety of materials to build their own part of a “green and sustainable community”.

Each group of children will create a building for the town, which will then be placed on a 25 square metre floor map.

Business and Education South Yorkshire, the Centre for Science Education at Sheffield Hallam University and Sheffield Industrial Museums Trust work in partnership to organise Build It, which supports the national curriculum.

More than 90 schools are involved and some of South Yorkshire’s leading construction industry experts have agreed to attend to help the budding builders to design and construct their projects.

Project co-ordinator Mary Milburn, said: “Build It is a great chance for primary school pupils to work together and learn more about jobs in the construction industry.

“This event is action packed every day from start to finish, with pupils getting the chance to find out more about the world of work.”
