Budding young athletes get chance to try out triathlon

Hundreds of youngsters hoping to become the next Alistair or Johnny Brownlee will line up at Concord Sports Centre to swim, run and cycle at the Tata Kids of Steel triathlon event.

The Tata Kids of Steel series aims to encourage children to adopt a healthier lifestyle through sport and exercise, by working in partnership with the local community.

Concord Sports Centre is set to play host to one of 12 events taking place across the country in 2013, encouraging eight to 13-year-olds, regardless of ability or experience, to get involved.

The series has enabled more than 50,000 children to participate in triathlons since it was launched by Tata Steel and the British Triathlon Federation in 2007.

This year will see up to 10,000 youngsters swim, cycle and run an estimated 10,000 kilometres, the same distance the Olympic Torch is set to travel from London to the next Olympic host city, Rio de Janeiro, in celebration of the 2012 Olympic legacy.

Sytske Seyffert, Tata Steel Director of Corporate Communications and Public Affairs, said: “This is the seventh year we have worked alongside the British Triathlon Federation to organise Tata Kids of Steel, a series we are very proud of.

“We are delighted to be able to bring this popular event to Sheffield in 2013. Our event in Sheffield enables children to have a fantastic day out while participating in sport. There will be opportunities for around 10,000 children to take part in the 2013 Tata Kids of Steel series, which is an immense achievement for everyone involved.”

Zara Hyde Peters OBE, CEO of British Triathlon Federation and Trustee of the British Triathlon Foundation Trust, said the initiative “has been a big success in our seven year relationship, benefiting both UK children and the development of our sport”.

Teachers or parents interested in signing up children to the event, should contact Michelle Scott at British Triathlon on 07834 542086 or by emailing [email protected]

The event takes place on September 18. Places are free and are allocated on a first-come first- served basis. Youngsters should be aged between eight and 13 at the time of the event, but do not need any previous triathlon experience.
