Bulbs light up ‘natural cathedral’

ITS wildness appealed to the poet Philip Larkin who described it as “the most beautiful spot in Hull” and a “natural cathedral”.

These days Hull Council is in the early stages of creating a community woodland and history trail in the city’s former General Cemetery, which was established in 1847.

Volunteers, led by neighbourhood co-ordinator, Coun Rosie Nicola, planted a range of wild flower bulbs in the cemetery, off Spring Bank West, in the city, on Saturday, after a litter pick. The Wyke area team is asking volunteers how they want to see the cemetery develop. Larkin chose the cemetery as the setting for a photograph on the sleeve of an album of him reading The Less Deceived. The cemetery, which was taken over by the council in the early 1970s when it closed for burials, is already part of the Larkin Trail.
