Bureaucracy: 'Transfer civil servants to Yorkshire' call

MP Hugh Bayley urged the Government to give more civil servants marching orders from Whitehall to York to cut costs.

Following the Chancellor's Budget announcement that all departments would have to cut costs by 25 per cent the York Central MP has written to every Secretary of State asking them to consider relocating jobs to cheaper offices in York.

He argues York's central position in the country and its excellent road and rail links make it an ideal location for administrative jobs. He suggests using the space next to the existing Defra buildings at King's Pool to create a "York Government Campus".

Mr Bayley said: "The Government... should be thinking about relocating jobs out of London, where office costs are much more expensive.

"York already has outline consent to build offices next to the Defra site at Kings Pool. The Defra site works well and extending it would create a major 'Government Campus' in York."
