Burglar stole from nursing home room

A CALLOUS burglar stole a purse containing £1,000 from another resident's room while visiting his grandfather in a nursing home.

The victim of Christopher Day's theft had left her bag in her mother's room while speaking to staff at the nursing station on the second floor during a visit to the Hopton Court home in Armley, Leeds.

Cassie Williams prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court yesterday she had travelled upstairs in the lift with Day and had seen him in the corridor when she briefly left her mother a short time earlier.

Other staff had seen him walking around as well as speaking to his grandfather.

But he then slipped into the pensioner's room and took the purse containing cash, credit cards and a key from her daughter's bag telling her: "I'm just taking this."

Although she suffered some memory problems she was alert enough to tell her daughter who immediately alerted staff.

However Day had already left the building.

Day, 32 of Castle Grange, Grange Avenue, Leeds, was jailed for 876 days after admitting the burglary.
