Businesses given help to take on apprentices

MORE businesses in Sheffield are being encouraged by the council to take on apprentices, and are being offered help from the city’s support service “Opportunity Sheffield”.

Funded with European cash, the organisation was established in April last year to act as a support service for employers and has been most successful in helping businesses to grow by recruiting apprentices.

So far, during the current academic year 1,227 people have started a new career via an apprenticeship scheme and now Sheffield Council says it wants more employers to reap the same benefits.

Coun Ian Auckland, the authority’s member for business, transport and skills, said: “When employers take on an apprentice they are getting someone who is ready to put maximum effort into both work and learning new skills.

“That’s the jackpot for most businesses and it’s a win-win situation. Not only are young people given an opportunity to train and build up experience, but they are working for employers who are committed to their development.

“As a city we have achieved some very positive steps forward, working closely with business and industry to help the people of Sheffield gain better employment potential.

“As a council, we are not complacent about achievements like this and are constantly working to promote the schemes and broaden their scope.”

Anna Parsons, front office and revenue manager of the Holiday Inn Royal Victoria, added: “We believe that young people who want to learn skills in the workplace are a precious resource for any business.

“That’s why we are strong supporters of the apprenticeship scheme, which combines the best of real work experience and valuable training.

“It’s a great feeling for any manager to see new employees grow in confidence as they become trusted members of the team.”
