Businessman loses battle with cancer

TRIBUTES have been paid to Yorkshire businessman and philanthropist Jack Brignall, who died on Tuesday after a battle with cancer.

Hull-based property developer Mr Brignall was a business partner of the late Lord Hanson when he founded the firm which eventually became the Anglo-American conglomerate, the Hanson Trust.

Mr Brignall was also the founder and chairman of the Hull-based property developers, the Wykeland Group.

A statement issued on behalf of the Wykeland Group yesterday said: "Everyone at Wykeland is deeply saddened by this loss and will miss his unbounded passion for the business."

Mr Brignall was born in Beverley in 1927. His business career began when he founded Commercial Motors in 1954. He was involved in a merger with Oswald Tillotson in 1964, which made it the largest commercial vehicle organisation in the UK. The company later became the Hanson Trust.

He received an MBE last year for services to the community.
