Call for 5pc increase in tobacco taxes

Action on Smoking and Health has called for a 5 per cent increase on tobacco tax, saying it would cut smoking and save millions in health costs.

It estimates it would lead to 190,000 fewer smokers and benefit the taxpayer in the first five years by more than 270m a year through increased revenue and less ill-health. Ash’s report has been supported by a number of health charities.
