Call box makeover after fighter hits gold standard

Other Olympic gold medallists have golden postboxes but boxer Luke Campbell is the only one to have a telephone box repainted in his honour.

Painters set to work yesterday morning to transform one of Hull’s famous cream phone boxes to mark the 24-year-old’s success in Saturday’s fight against Ireland’s John Joe Nevin.

Phone company KC earlier pledged to paint the booth gold, silver or bronze, depending on which medal the Hull-born bantamweight won.

Yesterday, the classic K6 box closest to St Paul’s Boxing Academy, where Campbell began boxing at the age of 13, was turned gold in celebration.

A KC spokesman said: “To compete at Olympic level is the culmination of years of hard work and dedication and we wanted to mark Luke’s success in a way that only Hull can, regardless of what colour medal he received.

“Amongst the local community there’s been an overwhelming sense of pride in his achievement and no doubt it will inspire more of Hull’s young people to strive to be the best they can be.”

BT does not operate in Hull. A postbox in the city has also been painted gold by Royal Mail.
