Campaign boost for apprenticeships

DOZENS of employers in a Yorkshire city have given young jobseekers the chance of a new career after 100 apprentices have been signed up in less than 100 days.

The York Apprenticeship Challenge was launched on June 15 to encourage businesses throughout the city to recruit apprentices.

The campaign officially ends on September 22, but 100 apprenticeship pledges have already been achieved. About 60 employers have so far taken on apprentices in a range of roles including hairdressing, communications and construction.

York Council’s cabinet member for corporate services, Coun Julie Gunnell, said: “It can be tough for school leavers to get on the employment ladder, so this campaign is all about giving them the best possible start in their working lives. Apprenticeships make a real difference to business and help to train the workforce for the future. So I am really pleased to see so many local businesses throughout the York Apprenticeship Challenge open their doors to give young people that crucial helping hand in their career.”

The council oversaw the scheme along with the National Apprenticeship Service and several training providers.
