Campaign to halt 600 homes scheme is backed by school’s deputy head

A DEPUTY headteacher has backed a campaign to save a riding school from being closed to make way for 600 houses.

Robert Cameron, deputy headteacher of a special school in Bradford, is among hundreds opposing a housing scheme at Fagley Quarry in Bradford.

An outline planning application was submitted earlier this month and opposition to the proposal is now gathering pace.

The scheme threats the future of Throstle Nest Riding School, which rents land from the landowner.

Mr Cameron, of Delius Special School, has written to the council to state his objections.

He said: “The farm and riding school have benefited many children in the Bradford area over the years, especially the pupils of our school who have gained many fine motor skills as well as develop confidence in themselves.”

Objections have come from across the Yorkshire region.

Carolyn Goldstraw, of Sheffield, who made financial contributions towards the cost of the indoor arena, which was opened by Princess Anne in 2012, said: “Having been at the opening and contributed donations to the indoor arena I do not wish to hear this all being swept away.”

Earlier this week residents attended a packed public meeting at St Clare’s Community Centre in Fagley.

Sarah Hamilton, of the Throstle Nest Riding for the Disabled Group, said: “Feelings and tempers were running high and Councillor Geoff Reid was struggling to keep control at times.

“David Ward MP also spoke and tried to calm the mood of the meeting and organise a team of representatives to fight this horrific proposal.”

Jeannette Wheeler, owner of the riding school and a Fagley resident for 50 years said: “It is heartwarming to feel and be told about the affection the local residents have for the Riding School.

“We appreciate the support and hope that we will be able to continue providing this popular and much needed service for many years to come.”

A date has yet to be set for a planning committee to consider the scheme.
