Campaigning councillor resigns

A CAMPAIGNING councillor has hit out at council leaders after resigning from his post.

Coun Nick Harvey, Green Party member for Hertford Ward on Scarborough Borough Council since 2009 who has been heavily involved in a number of campaigns, yesterday announced his resignation, citing frustration at the chief executive of the council and the head of members services for “refusing” to respond to residents’ letters.

“I am finding it increasingly difficult,” he said.

“It is very frustrating having letters ignored.

“I work for a living, claim no council expenses and all I have asked for is my letters I write on behalf of local people to receive a reply.

“It is a basic duty of an elected councillor to deal with issues raised by local people you are elected to serve.”

Coun Harvey has been a key voice in the campaign to keep Hunmanby library open in the wake of North Yorkshire County Council cuts.

Scarborough Borough Council was contacted yesterday by the Yorkshire Post but declined to respond to Coun Harvey’s comments.
