Camron Q&A: Yorkshire council faces £7.5m cuts in funding

WAKEFIELD Council will have less money to support services such as voluntary organisations and roads it was revealed yesterday as senior councillors were told of an immediate loss in funding of £7.5m.

The council's Cabinet approved an urgent report on the impact of the cuts on the council's own 2010-11 budget and its financial plans.

The report, which will go to full council in July, said the unprecedented in-year reductions and prospects for the future meant the cabinet would need to revise its medium term financial plan and take immediate actions to make savings in the current year.

The actions include a review of the current council redundancy scheme, strict controls on vacancies, savings in general spending and tightening of controls on new contracts and authorisation for orders and spending.

Previously the council has indicated more than 3,000 jobs may have to go over coming years if the cuts are as severe as feared.

Yesterday council leader Peter Box said: "Government Departments, including the Department of Communities and Local Government, have been asked to cut their budgets by 25 per cent.

"The reductions in funding we were expecting for the Government total 7.5m. This means that we have less money to support voluntary organisations, less money to spend on highways and less money to spend on housing and planning."
