Cancer charity to benefit as city garden opened to public

HUNDREDS of plants, including some colourful and unusual species, are on show in a Sheffield garden which is set to open for charity this Sunday.

Marian Simpson raised £580 for Cancer Relief the last time she opened her garden at 34 Dover Road, in Hunters Bar, for charity, and says she hopes to double that amount this time.

She said: “Last time, I really wasn’t sure how many people would come. In the event, over 140 people came from all over South Yorkshire, and most of those are likely to come back.

People were incredibly kind about the garden, telling me how much they enjoyed the visit.

“I had a few letters afterwards saying it was the best small to medium garden they’d seen.

“Two people even said they preferred it to the Chelsea Flower Show.”

This year a new area of the garden has been opened up and there is also an expanded alpine area, as well as shrubs, borders and exotic flowers.

Plants will also be on sale, priced from £1 to £5, and advice from Mrs Simpson herself is free.

She added: “One of the nicest things last time was watching people talk to each other about different features of the garden.”

Admission between 10.30am and 5.30pm on Sunday costs £2.50, with all money going to the Cancer Relief charity.
