Car park plan for silent city brewery

The site of the former Tetley’s brewery in Leeds could be turned into a temporary car park with the HQ becoming a hive of culture.

The brewery had been part of the city for 189 years but in June workers walked through the gates for the last time.

Yesterday Carlsberg UK said it was proposing to turn the site into a temporary car park and informal green space with a contemporary art gallery in the headquarters building.

A public exhibition event will be held on Thursday, September 22, between 1 and 8pm at Tetley’s House, which is accessible from Crown Point Road, to discuss Carlsberg UK Ltd’s plans.

Since the brewery closed, Carlsberg has continued to maintain a presence on the site, with a workforce based in Tetley’s House. In June, Carlsberg said employees would continue working at the site in roles such as telesales.

It is proposed that the headquarters building is leased to PSL (Project Space Leeds) which will create a new gallery together with associated workspace for creative and cultural industry organisations, education rooms and a bistro/bar at ground level. PSL is an independent, not-for-profit organisation.

The proposals incorporate the creation of a green space of approximately 1.2 acres for amenity and recreational use by the general public.

Feedback from the public consultation will be used to inform a planning application, which the company said last night it plans to submit later this year.

Following the closure of the brewery in Leeds all Tetley’s cask beer is being brewed at the Marston’s-owned Banks’s brewery in Wolverhampton, while Tetley’s Smoothflow has been moved to the Molson Coors brewery in Tadcaster and dark ales, such as Tetley’s Mild, have been outsourced to Cameron’s Brewery in Hartlepool.
