Care home plans set for approval

REVISED plans to demolish Whitby’s former magistrates court house and build a care home on the site are due to be approved after concerns were raised over the initial designs.

The re-development of the Watershed Lane site would see a 47-bedroom care home constructed, but reservations over the scheme were expressed by Whitby Town Council and local residents. A public consultation raised fears over the impact the development would have on the neighbourhood, as well as concerns over parking and the increased risk of flooding.

But the revised proposals submitted by the applicant, David Wilson, have increased the number of parking spaces from eight to 12 and the size of the care home has been reduced.

Scarborough Borough Council’s planning officers have stressed the existing building is of “limited architectural merit” and the brownfield site is suitable for re-development.

The proposals have been recommended for approval.

The council’s planning and development committee is due to discuss the application on Thursday.
