Cash for Kids role for Christa Ackroyd

The ex-newsreader has taken up the position of patron for Radio Aire and Magic 828’s Cash for Kids, which last year raised nearly £1m to support 21,659 sick and deprived children in Leeds and West Yorkshire.

It move sees Christa return to Radio Aire where she was the first voice to be heard when it began broadcasting in September 1981. She went on to become the station’s news editor, the first female editor in commercial radio and then the station’s programme controller.

On her new role back at the station, Christa said: “It really feels like coming home.

“I had the best of times there. Radio has always been a passion of mine and the achievements of Radio Aire and Magic 828’s Cash For Kids in helping tens of thousands of sick and deprived children each year deserves all the support I can give.

“I well remember our first charity appeals way back in the 80s when, no matter how tough times were, listeners dug deep and raised incredible amounts of money.

“That the tradition continues, again in a difficult economic climate, shows the generosity of Yorkshire folk is undiminished.

“I offer my whole hearted support knowing we will have fun along the way.”

She added: “To walk through the doors at Radio Aire and Magic 828 bought back so many happy memories.

“I look forward to creating some more.”
