Cathedral showcase for artists

Duncan Lowry helping to hang the paintings at the North's leading showcase for professional artists.

The Great North Art Show, which began yesterday and will run until Saturday, September 18, is now in its ninth year and is featuring work by more than 30 artists – its largest number ever – in Ripon Cathedral, with watercolours, oils, pastels photography and etchings.

It also includes an art trail featuring work by more than 20 artists taking in 14 venues including independent galleries, shops, cafs and businesses across the city.

The Workhouse Museum is being used for the first time to display work, and proceeds from sales will help fund the restoration of Ripon Cathedral’s organ, expected to cost more than 300,000.
