CCTV deterrent for drivers using bus lanes at peak times

BUS lanes on two of Sheffield's busiest roads are soon set to be enforced by CCTV cameras, meaning that motorists using them at peak times will face fines of £60.

From mid-November, drivers using the bus lanes on Queens Road and Granville Road during morning and afternoon rush hours will be given warning notices to let them know they've committed an offence.

Two months later, "full enforcement" of the cameras will begin, which bars drivers from using the lanes between 7.30am and 9am and again between 4pm and 6.30pm on weekdays.

Coun Ian Auckland, Sheffield Council's cabinet member for business and transport, said: "We've already been successful in using camera enforcement to improve public transport journey times elsewhere in the city and to be fair to other road users who obey the rules.

"The extended warning period is because this is not a case of trying to catch people out but helping to make it clear where people should and shouldn't be driving.

"There are already new signs along with the cameras. Please think before you drive along the bus lanes on Queens Road or Granville Road.

"After the warning period, anyone observed using these bus lanes at these times will receive a Penalty Charge Notice (PCN) of 60."

Sheffield Council will also be introducing free parking at various locations across the city in the run-up to Christmas.

From Saturday, November 27 until Christmas Day shoppers will be able to park for free in allocated council car parks and on street parking bays in the city centre from 9am on Saturdays and Sundays and from 3pm on Wednesdays.

The scheme has also been extended to cover Ecclesall Road, Sharrow Vale Road, Witham Road, Fulwood Road and London Road, which will have free parking available from 9am on Saturdays and also on Christmas Eve.

Coun Auckland added: "We are keen to encourage shoppers into the city centre and surrounding district centres. This year has been tough for many and we wanted to provide a boost.

"It's important to support both business and local people in the present economic climate. I hope the free parking will bring a little extra Christmas cheer to the people of Sheffield."
