Celebratory exhibition marks gallery’s 20-year milestone

TWO decades ago an art lover opened a gallery between a betting shop and a launderette, around the corner from Sheffield Wednesday’s Hillsborough ground.

At the time, Karen Sherwood was told her venture would never work, but since then she has exhibited the work of 10,000 different artists and expanded her premises several times.

This weekend, Cupola Contemporary Art opened a celebratory exhibition to mark its milestone which embraces the philosophy which Ms Sherwood said had brought her success.

She added: “Initially I wanted to hold a selected competition for the anniversary exhibition, but decided that wasn’t really in the spirit of the gallery.

“My mission was always to support and celebrate the work of as many artists and creative people as possible and to be accessible and diverse.

“Therefore, I have simply invited submissions and will showing work from over 50 artists, makers and jewellers in every space of the gallery.

“It has been the most difficult and challenging exhibition I have ever put together, but as anyone who knows me knows, I love a challenge.”

Many of the pieces on display at the Middlewood Road gallery will be available for sale at prices ranging from £5 to £5,000. For information call 0114 285 2665.
