A century on, are we forgetting the legacy of the Great War?

According to the report, produced from research by the British Council, most people’s knowledge of the Great War - which began 100 years ago - is limited to fighting on the Western Front.

The document - Remember The World As Well As The War - reveals a lack of understanding of the global scale and impact of the war, and calls on the UK and the rest of the world to use centenary commemorations to help people gain a better understanding of the global nature of the conflict.

The report was produced from research carried out for the British Council by YouGov, which surveyed over 1,200 people.

In the UK, fewer than half of 1,081 people were aware that North America and the Middle East played a part in the First World War.

Less than a third of UK respondents associated the war with the fall of the Ottoman Empire and just 11 per cent were aware of its link with the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinians.

The Yorkshire Post, in partnership with the University of Leeds, has launched a Legacies of War project to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the outbreak of the First World War.
