Century up for 'no cold calling' zones

A LANDMARK in the fight against doorstep crime has been reached with the launch of the 100th no cold calling zone in York.

More than 4,400 properties across the city are now included in the scheme, which was launched in 2008 by York Council and North Yorkshire Police.

A section of Malvern Avenue in Holgate has now been designated as the 100th cold calling controlled zone and was also recently named a Neighbourhood Watch area.

The head of policing operations in York, Chief Inspector Dave Hannan, said: "The introduction of the 100th cold calling controlled zone in York is a milestone that we can all be proud of.

"The zones have proved to be a very effective deterrent to unwanted doorstep callers and provide reassurance for elderly and other vulnerable people who may feel frightened and intimidated when a stranger knocks on the door.

"The increased neighbourhood awareness that the zones have created is also vitally important."

The zones are aimed at preventing residents from becoming the victims of crime from cold callers and to stop rogue traders pressurising people into signing up for goods and services they do not want.
