Ceremony to kick off school building

A TURF-CUTTING ceremony will be held today on the site of one of the new schools being built in Hull as part of the multi-million Building Schools for the Future programme.

The £12m West Hull primary school, which still does not have an official name, will be built by Balfour Beatty and will have 420 places to accommodate pupils from Tilbury and Bethune Park primary schools.

The development will also include 40 places for pupils from Ganton Special School’s primary department, 40 places for primary age pupils from the Education service for the Hearing and Visually Impaired (ESHV) and a 48-place nursery.

The ceremony will be performed by Sue Wright, the headteacher at Bethune Park. Construction is expected to take 18 months, with the school opening in September next year.

The development is close to the new Sirius Academy which opens this September, and the hope is that children will begin at the nursery and complete their education at the nearby school. Entrance will be via a community cafe, and the building will incorporate two multi-use games area, with a junior football pitch outside.
