Chance to discover the world of Victorian lady who lunches

THE flamboyance of Victorian dinner parties and the elegant pastimes of the prim and proper upper classes is being brought to life in the 21st century.

Throughout the half-term holiday, visitors to the Castle Museum in York can learn how the Victorian lady of leisure planned 12-course banquets. There will also be the opportunity to sample the fashionable delicacy that was cucumber soup.

The assistant curator of social history, Lucy Knock, said: “Taking inspiration from our fantastic Victorian collection, we have planned some fun, family activities for this February half-term.

“Children can learn about Victorian life and get involved in some hands-on activities, too.”

One of the activities on offer will give visitors the opportunity to make their own silhouettes which were all the craze during the period.

They can capture the likeness of a friend or loved one in black paper, inspired by Victorian silhouettes from the museum’s collection and even have
their own Victorian classical portrait made by a real silhouette artist.

There is also a chance to learn more about the pastimes of Victorian ladies.

All the activities at the museum will allow visitors to get closer to authentic objects from the museum’s collection.
