Chance to pick up a piece of art for a pound at machines

NEW vending machines are giving the people of Leeds a chance to pick up a miniature masterpiece for just a pound.

The project by Leeds-based art collective Woolgather has made thousands of examples of tiny artwork available from the new machines in a bid to make art more accessible to the city’s residents.

Thirty artists from around the country were commissioned to create 150 works each for the Art Vend project, and locations for the vending machines include the Corn Exchange along with a selection of other venues.

John Slemensek from Woolgather said: “We’ve always wanted to get art to as wide a public as possible.”

The vending machine project has been supported by Leeds Inspired.

Help has also come from Leeds City Council, East Street Arts and all of the venues that will play host to the machines.

Artworks on offer include still-life lemons on tiles the size of Scrabble pieces along with the “world’s smallest action painting”.

Customers can also pick up a contract for an artist to make them a personalised “ident” in the style of a company logo of their choice.
