Chance to turn over new leaf and learn the art of foraging

A FORAGER who finds food in and among the overgrowth of Sheffield’s Ecclesall Woods is set to bring his expertise to the masses at a Forestry Commission event this weekend.

Patrick Harding will be demonstrating how to find ingredients such as sorrel, dandelion leaves, St George’s mushroom and elderflower.

He said: “To some extent, we have forgotten the herblore and wild food knowledge that was once part of everyday life.

“What was once thought of as old wives’ tales now has a real basis in science, and plants remain the basis of many modern medicines.”

Mr Harding’s foraging event will take place on Saturday at the 3,000-acre Sherwood Pines Forest Park, near Mansfield.

A spokesman for the Forestry Commission said: “Once upon a time Sherwood Forest supplied many of life’s necessities, from building materials to fuel. But it was also a key source of medicinal ingredients and food.

“Rustic remedies found in the wood include chickweed, good for a balm for dry skin; silverweed, to prevent blisters; and mint, excellent to improve digestion.”

Ranger Lindsay Brown added: “This will be a chance to tap into knowledge built up over thousands of years and enjoy a fascinating walk and talk from a real expert in the field.”
