A change of heart about charges

COUNCILLORS in Kirklees have changed their mind about contentious plans to charge residents for parking permits.

Yesterday it was announced the leaders of the three major parties in Kirklees have agreed that a plan to charge for residents parking permits will not go ahead.

In June members of Kirklees Council’s cabinet approved the introduction of a £30 charge for all resident and visitor permits. Following this a number of people contacted the council highlighting how many permit parking schemes were introduced either after development or to alleviate on-street parking problems close to major establishments such as hospitals and the Galpharm Stadium.

The major group leaders have listened to what has been said and have considered many of the points raised. They have agreed it is not the right climate to introduce a charge for permits as agreed in the budget.

However, this decision means the authority will need to find alternative ways of covering costs.

Other options being considered include extending parking enforcement activities, as well as introducing new pay and display areas.
